“Perfect” Therapy Doesn't Exist

Let's get real for a second – there's no such thing as doing therapy "right." I can't tell you how many new clients come in worried they'll say the wrong thing or not know how to "be good" at therapy. Here's the secret: the messy, imperfect conversations are usually where the magic happens.

Think about your closest friendships. Did they develop because you both followed a perfect script, or because you gradually got comfortable enough to be your authentic selves? Therapy works the same way. Some days you might cry, some days you might laugh, some days you might sit in comfortable silence. All of it is valid. All of it is progress. The sessions where you think nothing happened? Often those are the ones percolating in your subconscious, doing important work behind the scenes.

I love when clients show up in sweatpants, reschedule when they need to, or tell me "I have no idea what I want to talk about today." Because guess what? That's being human. And being human together – that's where healing begins. So if you've been putting off therapy because you're worried about doing it perfectly, consider this your permission slip to come as you are. Bedhead, morning coffee, confused thoughts and all. The work happens not despite the imperfections, but right in the heart of them.
